Creative Classes for Homeschoolers

We are excited to be offering two classes for homeschoolers this fall! Our classes for homeschool students are a great way to explore creativity and innovation using recycled materials, while interacting and collaborating with other students. Both classes are scheduled at the same time as our Paint Playground class. This allows caregivers to drop off their older kids for the homeschool class while they play with their younger kids in our art and play space. (Paint Playground has a separate fee.)

ARTventures for Homeschoolers

Join Marva for an artistic adventure! Students will sharpen their literacy skills while exploring art through book making, story-telling, and puppetry with a variety of art techniques and materials. Projects will be inspired by children's writers, old and new. Marva encourages a playful, process-oriented approach to learning and creating. Students will leave with a greater love of books and art-making!

About the Instructor

After 15 years teaching preschool and prekindergarten students Marva decided it was time to shake things up. She started back to school almost 30 years after graduating with her BA in Children's Theater from Central Washington University. Before she was a classroom teacher, Marva worked as an administrator and arts specialist  at Seattle Children's Theater, Studio East, and many other locations in the Seattle area.  In her spare time you can see Marva participating in art parades. Marva has been in 3 Fremont Solstice Parades, 5 Burien Arts-a-Glow , and 2 Buskers in the 'Burg, and the West Seattle Mermaid Parade. She was Seattle ReCreative's first intern before joining the staff.

Maker Mania for Homeschoolers

Come build your STEAM skills with us and experiment with unique everyday objects that can be creatively reused to solve craft/art problems. Students will design mini houses, learn origami folding techniques, create rockets, marble runs, catapults, boats, robots, critters and more! Focus will be on taking an idea from start to finish, strategizing and problem solving to create projects that are not only cool to look at, but also serve a purpose. Students will be using low-heat glue guns in this class.

About the Instructor

Originally from the Pacific Northwest, Mike recently returned from Albany, New York, where he taught for 10 years at the Free School (an urban alternative school). There, Mike found that origami is a wonderful catalyst to work in other subjects besides art. He has used origami to help teach math, science, cultural/social studies and other subjects. When not working with children at Seattle ReCreative, Mike loves to focus his energy on weight training and exercise, teaching and practicing martial arts (holding a black sash in Jeet Kun Do), teaching origami, and folding paper as his form of art expression.
